Let us talk about the setup of key equipment and safety when establishing a laboratory for andrology services. When establishing an andrology laboratory, we must start with an area which is large enough, usually for andrology services, anywhere between 50 to 100 square feet would be required to handle samples from at least about 5 to 6 patients a day. In addition to this area, there must also be adequate area for collection of semen samples. So, a semen collection area must be designated within the premises. The benches and the work area must have impermeable work surfaces which are easy to clean and easy to decontaminate with either detergent or 0.1 percent hypochlorite solution.

The key equipment’s that are used in an andrology laboratory are as follows:

  • The first is a top pan balance for weighing semen pots. This is one of the ways in which the volume of semen can be calculated using a density factor.

  • The second is a refrigerator used to store media and other consumables which require a storage of 2 to 8 degrees centigrade. A 37-degree centigrade incubator wherein CO2 is optional. So, if there is CO2 control that is available for the incubator, it is good. 300 to 500 G is used for normal semen analysis. 1000 G is used for semen preparation when you are looking at semen markers. And 2000 G may be used for viscous samples.

  • It is also important to ensure that the centrifuge has a sealed bucket design which prevents aerosols from forming inside the laboratory.

  • You would also require counting chambers. So, the different types of counting chambers as would be discussed in different sessions would be the modified Neubauer chamber and the Mackler chamber, both of which can be used for this purpose.

  • You would require a test tube warmer wherein reagents and test tubes can be bought and kept at 37 degrees centigrade.

  • One essential equipment that needs to be kept in an andrology laboratory is the microscope. The specifications of the microscope that is used in the andrology laboratory must include a binocular microscope and preferably one with a camera adapter so that images of semen specimens can be taken using the camera. The specifications of this microscope are that it should be a phase contrast microscope or it should have phase contrast optics. It should have a 10x, 20x, 40x and 100x oil immersion objective. It should have a wide field 10x objective.

  • There must be an eyepiece reticule to estimate mortality. There must be callipers or micrometres present on the stage as well as the up and down movement when focussing which will be used in the case of calibrating the depths of chambers. And having a heated stage on a microscope is preferred to keep the sample at 37 degrees centigrade when making an evaluation for factors such as mortality.

When we talk about high-quality male fertility assessments and treatments, it is important to establish a well-equipped andrology laboratory.

  • Spacious

  • Hygienic and

  • Efficiently organized work environment with impermeable surfaces, designated semen collection areas, and safety-focused equipment like sealed-bucket centrifuges, is critical for maintaining the integrity of samples and the safety of personnel.
